[ the simple truth in life: Adora cannot go more than a few hours without having some kind of purpose or assignment before she starts getting stir crazy.
[ The message itself is blank: No subject and no body text.
Attached is a graduation packet, congratulating the soldier on getting through training and, in glowing words, explaining that they're part of something bigger than themselves now. Further in, it details part of the soldier's new duties—namely, training new recruits.
The training information seems written under the assumption that whoever is reading it is already familiar with how this whole thing works from the other side. Understandably so, considering that whoever was supposed to receive it ostensibly just underwent this very training themselves. However, it does go into the reasoning behind the methods.
Essentially, it's made clear that everything the recruits go through—from complete isolation from the outside world, to rather severe punishments like withholding meals or being forced to exercise to the point of collapse—is meant to teach recruits that they are more than capable of pushing past whatever limitations they believe they have. More than that, anything they might not be able to accomplish alone, they can certainly accomplish with the help of their fellow soldiers.
Some of these methods seem standard to most military training, such as combat skills, teamwork, formations, etc. The thing that sticks out among all of it is the constant insistence that no one soldier is better than any other, and that there are no individual heroes. It's expected that UNA soldiers will protect each other fiercely and never leave another soldier behind. No success or failure is due to any individual, but always the accomplishment or mistake of the group as a whole.
More than that, though, is the subtle but repeated implication that civilians just aren't up to snuff, and that any bonds a soldier might form with a civilian will never compare to the bonds they form within the UNA. Civilians, it's implied, are simply less trustworthy, less strong, and less determined than those in the UNA. Because of this, standard practice during basic training, such as preventing the new recruits' implants from connecting to any non-UNA networks or forcing new recruits to abandon their old lives and old relationships completely, are clearly not a huge loss. After all, the soldiers around them will fill that gap in a much more fulfilling, genuine way.
Everything in the training manual makes it clear that the UNA regards their brutal training methods and dangerous missions as a point of pride, and that anyone not part of the UNA is somehow inherently less than. ]
[ Catra reads over the packet of information with a growing sense of irritation. This is just More Horde Bullshit, as far as she's concerned. None of this is new or shocking. It's just the rules of her life back home, but spelled out in a dossier. She already assumed the UNA was the same. Finally-- ]
So the UNA uses standard military indoctrination practices. Big deal. So what? I could have told you that without all this.
[ Catra, only you would think this is "standard." ]
Who is this, anyway? Not Morningstar, that's for sure.
[ The message pops up in front of her as she's just about to dodge out of the way of a particularly heavy-hitting punch, and it takes her off-guard for just long enough that she freezes instead of dodging. The blow lands right in her stomach and she gasps for air, winded. Her opponent takes the opportunity of actually managing to land a hit for once to land another, sending Catra flying. There's actually an audible gasp in the crowd-- the crowd here is familiar with her by now, and this isn't like Catra at all. ]
[ after that invitation HERE HE IS, the gremlin boy. the worst. everything is terrible but he's not as righteously mad as he'd have been about it two years ago. this sucks, but you know what?
he's been through worse.
so here he is, right where catra told him to come. ]
[ The location Catra left takes a little bit longer than usual to find-- it's away from the central area, off a twisty tunnel path that doesn't really stand out. It'd be easy to walk by it. There aren't many signs of regular occupation here. There used to be once-- there are still lights and signs that people once used this thoroughfare. But not anymore. Maybe a cave-in? Who knows.
After a bend in the tunnel, there's Catra, leaning on one side of the tunnel wall. She waves. ]
Yo.
[ Then she turns, and-- seemingly disappears between the walls? No, that's not quite right. On closer inspection, there's a small gap in the rocks, hard to spot in the low light. But there's air flowing through it, so it's definitely a gap and not a solid slab. Catra slips through easily-- Damian might be a tighter fit, but it's still perfectly doable.
On the other side is what can only be described as. A den. This is very clearly Catra's Hideaway. There are stacked boxes around the place, most of them empty, seeming to serve no other purpose than to sit on (or in). One by the entry, however, has a few stolen rations. In another corner is a mattress and a bunch of blankets and pillows, all of them covered in cat fur. Who knows who she got all this shit from. Or how she got them in the first place, not to mention, all the way down here without being spotted. The only thing in here that doesn't appear to be stolen are the old lights.
All in all, the small cavern is a good size for training in-- large enough for both of them to be able to move around and do some acrobatics, but not so big as to echo or leave room to run around. ]
... For what it's worth, if you tell anyone else about this place, I'll kill you.
[ She absolutely will not. But Damian doesn't need to know that.
Sometimes you just need a place where you can come to scream. ]
[ Adora's been pretty busy since the simulation started. Of course, she takes part in the supply runs without hesitation, but more than that is just...information gathering. trying to figure out what the hell is going on.
Which, of course, involves ~mingling with the locals~. Which also, unfortunately, involves a lot of drinks getting passed around and at some point one mixed up cup became another and--
Well, there's definitely a reason the texts coming from Adora's device don't make much sense before she somehow figures out the voice to text. So a flurry of nearly incomprehensible texts is finally followed by: ]
stupid phone i said the one with the pretty eyes why wont you work
[ Hopefully whatever sound is set for Catra's notifications isn't annoying because everything is definitely coming in multiple texts. ] catra catra oh there she is okay no dangit spell her name right

Color me surprised. UNA's looking pretty shaky right now, not like there's a huge call for it... you planning on doing some crime? I thought you were kinda a mousy type.
[ Tomoe tries for hours to reach Ren and Akechi before he realises he can find who else took an interest in the Antarctica expedition and ask any one of them why he can't get in contact. and if he still doesn't get an answer, at least he'll know it's something wrong with the entire group.
the only person he recognises from the post is Catra, so she's as good a place to start as any. ]
You, cat. You're on that Antarctica thing with the rest of them, aren't you? What has happened to Ren Amamiya and Goro Akechi? They aren't responding to messages.
[ Akechi, she could care less about. But Ren? Ren she likes. And now that Tomoe is messaging her, she realises she hasn't seen them in a few days. She takes a while to get back to Tomoe, because once she reads the message, she drops what she's doing and goes to look around the base and ask after them.
Finally, she responds-- ]
... They're not where I am.
There's a second expedition team on a different island, though. They could be on that one. The reception out here is shitty, so it could just be that.
... I'll try to get the word out. If no one has seen them, we'll need to organize a search party. The conditions down here are no joke.
[ She stares at the message for a moment, uncomprehending.
What day is it? She frowns. Ren?? She hasn't talked to Ren in-- months. More than months. How much time has passed here? She quickly flicks through her backlog of messages, but it looks... mostly empty. Clearly not enough for anyone to miss her, apparently.
In a very un-Catra-like response, she types out only-- ]
[ Jason's response registers as "read" almost the minute he sends it, but the reply isn't immediate. On Jason's end, he can probably see some indication that Catra is trying to craft some kind of reply but keeps stopping and starting again in fits and bursts. So, she's not dead or gone.
On Catra's end, she spends several minutes trying to come up with a suitable reply.
The first is "Fuck off," but after a beat she considers that Jason hasn't actually done anything to deserve that, and deletes it.
Then she types "Leave me alone," but it occurs to her that will probably have the opposite of the desired effect, and deletes that too.
After that, she tries "What, like you care," and nearly hits send. But then the memory of their previous interaction before she'd gone home comes back to her, and her finger hesitates over the send button. Jason does care about her. He said as much. She has proof. So why does this rankle so much?
She deletes that reply too. Finally, she settles on-- ]
Was away for a bit.
[ She doesn't say "Sorry"-- Catra never says sorry. But part of her counts on Jason knowing it's implied. ]
Went home. Stuff happened. Etc. You owe me a couple birthday presents.
[ the text comes at a time when Adora is normally at work.
in the time since Catra's returned, she's been there more and more often. her behavior around Catra hasn't really changed outside of it, but as time goes on Adora seems more and more frustrated in general with everything around her. eventually, something has to give. ]
[ Catra has been spending less and less time at home-- since coming back, things have been... not worse, but not better either. Different, but not in a good way. After her initial freak-out, she's been ... distant. It doesn't seem like she's doing it on purpose. If anything, it more seems like ... she's trying to work things out on her own terms, but not really succeeding at it. ]

Date: 2020-09-25 09:34 pm (UTC)[ the text comes at a time when Adora is normally at work.
in the time since Catra's returned, she's been there more and more often. her behavior around Catra hasn't really changed outside of it, but as time goes on Adora seems more and more frustrated in general with everything around her. eventually, something has to give. ]
